Top tips for chartering a yacht in Mallorca
Planning your yacht charter is always an exciting time but, whether it’s your first time chartering a boat or this is a regular thing for you, the first thing you need to decide is where you want to go. There are so many amazing destinations in Europe, let alone the world, so it’s always a difficult decision to make.
With Mallorca being firmly placed on the map for being one of the best yachting destinations on the planet between the months of April and October, we thought we would share some of the reasons why you should charter a boat on this magical island this year.
Why Mallorca?
Mallorca has the third largest airport in Spain and a long list of airlines that fly to and from the island throughout the year. Add competitive flight prices to the mix and getting to this remarkable destination from anywhere in Europe is easy as pie.
The island boasts dreamy turquoise waters, palm trees and warm white sandy beaches. Yes, that’s right, you don’t have to travel all the way to the Caribbean to get this because Mallorca has it all, and much more in fact. The 554km of coastline encompasses beaches, rugged cliff edges, little coves and caves all waiting to be explored. It really is paradise on earth and there is no better way to discover these treasures than by boat.
Chartering options
A variety of yacht charters suiting an array of budgets including sailing yachts, catamarans, motor yachts and smaller speedboats are available in Mallorca. There are two basic kinds of yacht charter available. Firstly, bareboat charters are offered by some companies for those who have a qualified skipper in the group, someone who can legitimately drive or sail the boat and instruct others to act as crew. They will need to produce an ICC (International Certificate of Competence), which is the equivalent to the RYA Day Skipper qualification. The second type of yacht charter is called a crewed charter, this is when none of your party has the relevant boat license or the boat is only available skippered and sometimes crewed.

The flying-high experience

The top deck is the perfect situation for the sun worshippers to gather, as it boasts quite a selection of sunbeds. The catamaran sleeps up to 11 people across five cabins, all with bathrooms, and a single berth in the starboard forward hull. This single berth would be used by the skipper if one is required.
Where to go
Once you decide on your boat the fun doesn’t stop there. Whether you are doing a day charter or a week-long one, it's a good idea to create a rough plan of your adventure so you can make the most of the trip. Mallorca boasts endless beautiful destinations where it is easy to anchor, and each spot has its own unique attractions. Popular beach destinations include Es Trenc, Portals Vells, Illetas, and Formentor, whilst the usual ports and towns to moor or anchor for evening escapades are Port d’Andratx, Port de Soller, Port Adriano, Puerto Portals, Port de Pollenca, Cala d’Or and Palma.
Where to eat
The island has plenty of beach clubs and restaurants that are yacht-friendly, with many resorts even offering taxi services from your boat to the coastline. There is something available for everyone, from exclusive beach clubs like Nikki Beach to first class restaurants such as Ca's Patro March, which overlooks the rocky side of Cala Deià in Mallorca's Serra de Tramuntana mountains.
Venturing further away
Being based in Mallorca, you have easy access to other areas in the Mediterranean, including the neighbouring hotspots of Ibiza, Formentera and Menorca. If you are chartering a yacht for a week or more, these islands have their own unique charm and are well worth a trip. However, we wouldn’t recommend travelling all the way there for a day yacht charter, quite simply because Mallorca has more than enough to offer with more than 200 beaches and other attractions around its coastline.
