Els Calderers de Sant Joan, Sant Joan

Country house & petting farm in central Mallorca

featured in Sights & sites

Els Calderers is a manor house situated between Vilafranca and Sant Joan. The house was once at the centre of a large wine estate but like so many others in Mallorca, it fell victim to the phylloxera disease. Reopened in 1993, the 18th-century house is now a museum of Mallorcan furniture and traditions. Set in beautiful countryside, this is a lovely place to spend a few hours.

The history of the Els Calderers estate can be traced back to the year 1285, when the manor is mentioned in historic records for the first time as belonging to the Calderers family. In the 18th century the noble family Verí bought the entire estate. The present imposing main building was probably built from 1750 on and continuously expanded until the early 19th century.

You can visit the wine cellar, granary, bakery, chapel and wash-house, as well as wander around the main house with its paintings, guns and toys. A selection of farm animals are housed in the out buildings and there are pretty gardens to wander through.

Visitor comments

  • "There are a number of grand manor houses in Mallorca, but not all of them are accessible. This one is open to the public and is furnished (mainly between the 1920s and 1950s by the last owner to live there). The family no longer do, so they have decided to open it. The waxwork people are a bit naff, but the interiors are well worth seeing, and the courtyard is marvellous. If you like houses, then this is well worth a visit. There are goats, sheep and pigs in the farmyard for the kids (as well as a large friendly guard dog). Highly recommended." - Trip Advisor
  • "Visited Els Calceres today; what a lovely surprise. Easy to find following the directions, a hidden gem on the flatlands. A nostalgic step back a few centuries with the house and contents being very well preserved. The small bar-restaurant provides simple food, which is complimented by the wine tasting, which wasn't half bad. The animals and grounds provided an added ambience of rural Mallorca. On top of this, the visit was like a peaceful retreat, where you can sit back and take in the quietness. A great visit, thank you" - Trip Advisor
  • "We went on a mystery tour with a tour company and ended up here. It is such a lovely place and so different from anything else we had seen in Majorca. The building is beautifully kept and rooms furnished as they would have been when it was originally built. The surrounding grounds are also beautiful and well kept. It is a gem in the middle of nowhere and I would love to revisit it sometime. There is also a farm attached to it which you can visit and see the animals which I loved. I would recommend anyone visit this place it is definitely not to be missed!" - Trip Advisor
